How to Communicate Your Vision to Your Makeup Artist

How to Communicate your Vision to your Makeup Art

Clear communication is the secret to loving your final makeup look. Knowing how to describe what you want—especially when using terms like soft, radiant, or full glam—helps your makeup artist bring your vision to life in a way that suits you.

This will allow your makeup artist create a look that truly fits you.

Starts out with how you want feel

Before getting into makeup details, think about the overall vibe. Do you want to feel natural, polished, glowing, confident, or bold? Describing how you want to feel gives your makeup artist direction right away.

What does “Radiant”, “Soft”, or “Full Glam” Really Mean?

These words are commonly used, but they can mean different things to different people—so clarity matters.

Radiant makeup focuses on the skin. It usually means glowing, healthy-looking, skin-like makeup with a luminous or dewy finish. Radiant does not mean oily or overly shimmery—it’s about a natural glow that looks fresh and effortless.

Soft glam makeup refers to the intensity of the look. Soft makeup has blended edges, gentle colors, and nothing harsh or dramatic. It can still be glamorous, just more subtle, balanced, and natural-looking.

Full glam makeup is more bold, defined, and polished. This usually includes fuller coverage skin, stronger contour and highlight, more dramatic eyes, defined brows, lashes, and a statement lip or eye. Full glam doesn’t mean “too much”—it means intentional, structured, and camera-ready.

Use Inspiration Photos

Inspiration pictures are helpful, but they work best when you explain what you like about them. Instead of just sending photos, tell your makeup artist what stands out to you:

  1. glowing or matte skin

  2. soft vs bold eyes

  3. natural vs dramatic lashes

  4. nude vs statement lips

Also mention what you don’t like in the photos. This helps your artist avoid anything that doesn’t fit your vision.

Honest about your Comfort Level

Let your makeup artist know what you’re comfortable with. If you don’t like heavy contour, dark eyes, bold brows, thick lashes, or if you do love those things—say it. Makeup should enhance you, not make you feel unlike yourself. Your MUA is going want you to feel confident, you are the one walking foot in your glam.

Trust your Artist

A professional makeup artist will adapt your inspiration to your face shape, skin type, and the event or lighting. Clear communication allows them to create a look that works beautifully both in person and in photos.
